Have you ever wondered what goes into plastic? Plastic is ubiquitous in our lives! There is a type of plastic known as low density polyethylene, or LDPE for short. It is indeed a bit special due to the fact that it has applications everywhere today. For example, it is this that make plastic bags, water bottles, and even playground equipment! The really cool thing about low density polyethylene, however, is that it can be made in a couple of different ways, and the method makes it either more stiff or more flexible. This allows it to be used for a wide variety of applications — all based on what we need!
Density in this context can be a little confusing, but it matters a lot when we discuss low density polyethylene. Low density polyethylene, is known for its low density, which describes how much the little pieces, or molecules, are pressed together. Think of the molecules as small spheres. High density means: the balls are packed tightly together. But if the balls are scattered further apart, and there is more space between them, then the density is low. Why is density important to understandPlastic, like all materials, has a particular density, and density helps us understand how the plastic will perform and what its best applications are.
Lets take a look at how density impacts the strength of low density polyethylene. Low-density polyethylene is more flexible, lower density means easier to bend. That’s why it’s so frequently used to make plastic bags. Have you ever attempted to bend a thick plastic bag? It can be really tough! However, if it is from low density polyethylene, it is much simpler to fold and use. You can ball it up and no matter what, it will return to its shape.
Low density polyethylene’s high density makes it strong and tear resistant. This is particularly significant for small items, such as water bottles. Water bottles must be durable so they won’t crack or lose their shape if you pack them with water. If they were constructed with low density polyethylene, however, they may damage or crack—disallowed for containing liquids.
As we just discussed, the ldpe low density polyethylene has an impact on the strength. A plastic bag made with low density polyethylene isn’t as strong, and if you pack it too high it will tear relatively easily. But one of this plastic’s advantages is that a water bottle made out of it is strong, will not easily break. A good approach for other common products that use low density polyethylene as well.

Water bottles, however, are made with high-density polyethylene because they need to be tough and durable.
