pe pp pvc

You know, the materials known as PE, PP or PVC? These are three key types of plastic that we use daily in many products. Red stands for polyethylene, gray for polypropylene, and white for polyvinyl chloride. As we come to better understand these materials, we can learn about the products we utilize and how they impact our lives.

Now that we know the names of these materials, let’s compare them more closely. Polyethelene (PE) is a soft and flexible plastic. This means it can flex and bend without cracking. For example, we use PE to produce plastic bags and food packaging because it is light and easy to carry. In contrast, PP is a tougher plastic material. It is stiffer, so it does not flex as much. We cover PP in applications such as food containers and bottle caps, where strength is very important. Lastly, we have PVC, which is very strong and tough. That’s why PVC is good for things such as pipes that transport water and window, frames that need to withstand the elements.

PE vs PP vs PVC

Each of these plastics has benefits and drawbacks. Let’s unpack this a little further. Think of PE as it is very flexible and easy to use. This makes it an excellent selection for a variety of common items. On the downside, it’s not as strong as PP or PVC, meaning it might not work for heavy-duty products. PP, however, is more rigid and resistant to heat and chemicals. This makes it an excellent choice for long-lasting items. PE can flex more, while this is more rigid and will crack if you bend it too much. Thirdly, PVC is durable and long-lasting which makes it a great choice for pipes or flooring. One issue with PVC or polyvinyl chloride, is that when it's produced or disposed of, it can give off harmful chemicals that are not good for the environment.
